Soil test kits get sorted by format on the shelf. Sorting them by what they test instead is often the more useful question. Two kits that look nearly identical in packaging can measure completely different things, and this page walks through every major category.
pH only kits
These test one number and nothing else. Strip kits, dial meters, and single parameter digital meters all fall into this group when sold without any nutrient capsules included.
A pH only kit answers a specific question well. It cannot tell you anything about phosphorus, potassium, or other nutrients. No pH reading, however accurate, changes that.

Basic NPK kits
NPK kits add phosphorus and potassium capsules alongside pH, and sometimes a rough nitrogen reading too. This is the most common mid tier retail kit. It is usually sold as a boxed set with several capsules of each type.
Treat the nitrogen number with real skepticism regardless of the kit. Nitrogen shifts in soil faster than any home kit format can reliably capture. That limitation applies to lab testing too, not just consumer kits.
Full panel kits
A full panel goes beyond basic NPK. It adds calcium, magnesium, and often a micronutrient package covering zinc, iron, manganese, copper, and boron.
This level of detail is really only available through a mail in lab kit. A retail strip or capsule format simply does not go this deep.

Moisture only kits
Moisture meters measure water content in the soil and nothing about fertility at all. They are popular for houseplants and container gardens. Overwatering causes more damage there than nutrient shortages typically do.
Buying a moisture meter expecting a pH or nutrient reading is a common mismatch. The packaging and shelf placement often look similar to a fertility kit.
Combo kits
Combo kits bundle two or three of the above into one probe. Most often that means pH, moisture, and light level together in a single device.
None of the individual readings match a dedicated single purpose tool for accuracy. Combo kits work best as a rough, ongoing check rather than a number to plan an amendment program around.
Disease and pathogen kits
A small number of specialty kits test for specific plant pathogens or nematodes rather than chemistry. These are far less common on a retail shelf. They usually come through a university plant diagnostic lab instead of a garden center.

Contamination and heavy metal kits
Lead, arsenic, and other heavy metal contamination require a dedicated test. This sits entirely separate from anything covered above. Standard retail kits, whatever they measure, do not screen for contamination at all.
This matters most for older urban lots or properties near a former industrial site. Contact your local extension office for a proper contamination screening rather than relying on a general fertility kit.
EC and TDS kits for hydroponics
Hydroponic and other soilless setups need EC or TDS meters instead of anything on this list. There is no soil sample involved. These meters measure dissolved nutrient concentration directly in water or nutrient solution.
A soil test kit will not function correctly in a hydroponic reservoir. Look specifically for a meter marketed for hydroponics or aquariums if that is your setup.
Organic matter kits
A small number of kits, mostly aimed at farmers and serious gardeners, test organic matter percentage using a loss on ignition or a simplified field method. This is a different measurement from nutrients or pH entirely.
Organic matter drives how well soil holds water and nutrients, so a low reading here often explains why fertility stays poor even after nutrient levels get corrected. Most basic retail kits skip this measurement, and a mail in lab panel is the more reliable route if you want it.
Soluble salts and EC kits for garden soil
These are a different product from the hydroponic EC meters mentioned above, despite measuring a similar underlying property. A soluble salts kit for garden or nursery soil checks for salt buildup from over fertilizing, poor drainage, or irrigation with hard water.
High readings point toward a leaching or drainage fix rather than a nutrient addition, which is the opposite of what a low fertility reading would suggest. Confusing the two kits, or misreading which problem you actually have, leads to exactly the wrong fix.
Physical property tools
Penetrometers and infiltration rings do not test chemistry at all, so they sit outside the usual soil test kit category entirely. They measure compaction and drainage instead of anything a lab report would show.

Why sorting by what they test beats sorting by price
Two kits at the same price point can measure entirely different things. Sorting by what they test, rather than by price or brand, is the fastest way to avoid buying a kit that cannot answer your actual question.
A cheap pH only kit is the right purchase for a lime decision. An expensive combo meter is the wrong purchase for that same decision, no matter how much it costs. Price tells you almost nothing about whether a kit can answer the question actually in front of you.
Matching the test to the question
Start with what you actually need to know, not the kit that looks most complete on the shelf. A lime decision needs pH.
A fertilizer decision needs at least NPK, ideally a full panel. A struggling plant with no obvious cause might need disease testing instead of any chemistry test at all.
